Who We Are

At the Morgridge Institute, our scientists and staff believe in Fearless Science. This means we are willing to take risks. We press against boundaries. We aim for science that we can’t currently imagine.

As an independent, private, non-profit research institute, we have the freedom to move quickly and decisively, to follow interesting and important questions wherever they may lead. We embrace the challenge of pursuing curiosity-driven research and give people time to prove an idea. And we judge their progress on the quality of the science rather than the volume of grants attained and papers published.

Morgridge investigators also are full UW–Madison faculty with home academic departments. We are deliberately structured to allow our scientists to be directly involved in both Morgridge and UW–Madison research. The institute is a formal affiliate of UW–Madison, meaning that all Morgridge employees enjoy many of the benefits of campus life.

We are passionate about inspiring and engaging the public in the joy of science. Outreach to schools and communities is integral to our work. And Morgridge offers tremendous support services for early-career scientists — including career development, leadership training, writing/editing support, mentorship and HR and finance support. Computational Power

Morgridge Research Computing gives scientists innovative computational tools to explore new frontiers in biology.

Discovery Building

Our home, the Discovery Building, has a public Town Center that hosts more than 100,000 visitors annually. It also includes two embedded Teaching Labs that offer high-end research opportunities for K-12 students.

Research Hub

Morgridge serves as a hub for metabolism research across UW–Madison, helping build community among more than 600 scientists across campus.

K-12

More than 30,000 K-12 students have participated in field trips since the building opened in 2011.

Fab Lab

Morgridge is home to an advanced Fab Lab where scientists design novel tools to advance their research.

National Leadership

Morgridge is home to programs that provide national leadership on biomedical imaging and data accessibility.

Bioethics
